In the spirit of celebrating Jane Jacobs’ 100th Anniversary last year, the "What would Jane see? Walking Tour" will focus on her contribution to the understanding of cities and urban life. The tour will apply concepts and ideas to the analysis of different spaces that exemplify contemporary urban development in downtown Minneapolis. The walking tour will be comprised the following areas: pedestrian mall (Nicollet Mall), green spaces (Loring Greenway), parks (Loring Park), traditional urban fabric (Spruce Place, Harmon Place), Minneapolis Community and Technical College (MCTC) (modernist urbanism and its impact on cities), University of St. Thomas (role of universities and urban vitality), and public plazas (Peavey Plaza).
Participants will receive documentation that highlights Jane Jacobs’ important ideas about urban development and urban living. The walking tour will offer the opportunity to discuss, examine, and apply Jane Jacobs’ concepts to downtown Minneapolis urban spaces, their function, their intention, their history, and their use against contrasts and comparisons to Jane Jacobs' ideas.
Tour Tips/Suggestions: Comfortable walking shoes. Water for hydration if you normally need it during walks. Clothing that protects your body from any potential weather conditions such as cold, wind or rain.
