University of New Orleans Urban Entrepreneurship and Policy Institute
Endowed Professor of Preservation, Planning and Urban Studies
New Orleans
As a scholar, educator and practitioner of urban design, planning and preservation, I analyze and advance the revitalization and resilience of built environments. My work revolves around the distress of historic buildings, legacy businesses and anchor institutions. After consulting in cultural resources management as a structural engineer and architectural historian, I earned a PhD in Urban Planning and Certificate in GIS from Harvard and a number of fellowships from think tanks and philanthropies invested in nonprofit management of the built environment. For these organizations, I have evaluated philanthropic, private and public support for transit-oriented development, historic preservation, neighborhood stabilization, commercial revitalization, and hazards mitigation. I am currently researching the role of entrepreneurship support organizations in the redevelopment of historic and new urbanism, specifically in New Orleans and Martha's Vineyard. Previously, Previously, I investigated chronic risks and acute hazards to Main Streets, mass transit architecture and midcentury airports in Boston, Newark, New York and D.C. for AECOM, DMJM Harris, Ochsendorf Block, Hector Design Service and the Smithsonian. I serve on numerous nonprofit boards and public sector tasks forces (Louisiana Landmarks Society, Harvard GSD Alumni Council, HousingNOLA, NORA, etc.) in addition teaching at UNO and mentoring prospective architecture and planning practitioners.
