Valerie A. Purry originally from Oakland, California has been residing in Brandon, Mississippi for twenty years. She attended Cal State University Hayward for three years studied Criminal Justice Administration. She graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice concentration in Juvenile Justice, and has a Master of Arts degree in Criminology, as well as a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning with a concentration in Community Development and Housing from Jackson State University. Valerie's research interest are urban issues, i.e., abandoned homes in impoverished neighborhoods, revitalization of former commercial corridors and affordable housing for formerly incarcerated females . An advocate and mentor for female offenders and those who were formerly incarcerated, she has served as a transitional home director for formerly incarcerated females. An experienced research assistant Mississippi State University Social Science Research Center. She assisted with the research of former female juvenile offenders once they were released and how they transitioned after 30/60/1 year at home and school. She is interested in developing a program for formerly incarcerated females transitioning from prison to their community with employment opportunities as well as any social, psychological needs they may have to make their transition smooth.
